AEO vs GEO: is there a real difference?
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO) describe the same discipline and are used interchangeably by most practitioners. The difference is emphasis: AEO names the surface, the answer engine a user is querying, and comes out of the older work on featured snippets and voice results. GEO names the mechanism, the generative model composing the response, and comes out of the research literature on influencing what models produce. In practice both describe getting a brand named and cited inside AI-generated answers, and buying one does not get different work from buying the other.
01Side by side
Where AEO and GEO part company.
| Dimension | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| What the name points at | The surface: the answer engine the question is put to. | The mechanism: the generative model composing the response. |
| Where the term came from | Practitioner language, extending the earlier work on featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice answers. | Research language, from work on influencing the content of generated responses. |
| Implied scope | Slightly broader: includes answer surfaces that retrieve and quote without generating much, such as a featured snippet. | Slightly narrower and more current: centres on models that write the answer rather than extract it. |
| What the work involves | Crawl access, rendering, structured data, extractable passages, entity clarity, authority. | Crawl access, rendering, structured data, extractable passages, entity clarity, authority. |
| How it is measured | Share of answer across a defined prompt set. | Share of answer across a defined prompt set. |
| Who uses the term | More common in agency and SEO-adjacent writing. | More common in AI-native and technical writing. |
02The overlap
The overlap is nearly total
Set the two definitions side by side and the deliverables are identical: make the site reachable and parseable, make the passages liftable, make the business identifiable as an entity, and earn mentions on sources the engines already draw from. Nothing in either definition asks for work the other does not.
The distinction that does occasionally matter is scope at the edges. A featured snippet is an answer without much generation, so it sits more naturally under AEO; a model answering from training memory with no retrieval at all sits more naturally under GEO. Both edges exist. Neither changes what a site has to fix.
A more useful question than which term is correct is which surfaces a given business is actually losing on, and that is answered by measuring rather than by definition. The prompt set and the engines it is run against decide the work far more than the acronym on the invoice does.
03Which you need
The answer depends on what is broken.
01
Use AEO when you are talking to a search team
The term connects to work they already recognise: snippets, structured data, question-shaped headings. It arrives as an extension of an existing practice rather than as a replacement for it, which is both easier to fund and closer to the truth.
02
Use GEO when the surfaces in question are assistants
If the questions your buyers ask are going to ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity rather than to a results page, GEO names what is happening more precisely. The answer is being written, not selected.
03
Be suspicious of anyone selling them as different products
A proposal that prices AEO and GEO as separate engagements with separate deliverables is describing a pricing structure rather than a discipline. Ask which specific tasks appear in one and not the other, and the list tends to come back empty.
04Questions
AEO and GEO, asked plainly.
- Which term should I use?
- Whichever your audience already recognises. Neither is more correct, and search volume for both is still small and unstable enough that picking one for ranking reasons is guesswork rather than strategy.
- Is AEO older than GEO?
- The idea behind AEO is older. Optimising to be the answer rather than a result predates generative assistants and goes back to featured snippets and voice results. GEO is the newer term and arrived with the models that generate rather than extract.
- Do agencies deliver different work under each name?
- Rarely. Compare two scopes and the same items appear on both: crawlability, rendering, schema, entity signals, quotable content and off-site mentions. Where the scopes do differ, the difference is usually the agency's own emphasis rather than the term.
- Is there a third term I should know?
- You will also see LLM SEO, AI search optimisation and search everywhere optimisation. All describe the same problem from a different angle, and the proliferation reflects a discipline that is roughly three years old rather than any real disagreement about the work.
- Does the choice affect how results are reported?
- No. Both are reported as share of answer against a fixed prompt set, sampled repeatedly because model answers vary between runs. The report format is the same whichever word appears at the top of it.
