GEO vs SEO: what actually differs?

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) and search engine optimisation (SEO) differ in what they compete for. SEO competes for a position in a ranked list of links, and is won by being clicked. GEO competes for a mention inside an answer an AI assistant writes, and is won by being named and cited. The two share most of their technical foundations, because a page a model cannot fetch or parse is invisible to both, and they diverge in how content is written and how results are measured.

02The overlap

Most of the work is the same work

Crawl access, server-side rendering, clean information architecture, internal linking and structured data serve both disciplines without modification. A page that a search crawler cannot reach is also a page an answer-time crawler cannot reach, and neither cares which acronym the agency used.

Authority behaves similarly on both sides too. A model deciding which of four sources to name is doing something close to what a ranking system does when it decides which of four pages to place first, and both lean on the same signals: who else references this source, and does the business exist as a recognisable entity.

The divergence is narrower than the marketing suggests, and sits almost entirely in the last mile. How a passage is written, whether the entity is disambiguated, and how the outcome is counted are the parts that are genuinely different. Everything under those is shared plumbing.

03Which you need

The answer depends on what is broken.

    Do the search work first if the site is technically broken

    A site that renders its content in the browser, blocks crawlers in robots.txt or ships no structured data has a problem that is fatal to both disciplines. Sequencing GEO ahead of that is buying the last mile of a road that does not exist yet.

    Do both if buyers are researching with assistants

    In categories where the first research step has moved into ChatGPT or Perplexity, search traffic can hold steady while the brand quietly stops being considered. Nothing in a rank report shows that happening, because the questions are being asked somewhere the report does not look.

    Do the answer work first if you already rank and nothing converts

    Ranking well while losing deals to competitors you keep hearing named is the signature of a visibility problem rather than a traffic problem. The pages are being found; they are not being quoted.

Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Search optimisation still governs the surfaces where people search with links, which remain enormous, and the technical foundations it establishes are what make generative visibility possible in the first place. GEO is an additional surface with its own last mile, not a replacement discipline.
Can I do GEO without doing SEO?
Not meaningfully. Every requirement GEO adds sits on top of crawl access, server-side rendering and structured data, which are search optimisation's own foundations. A site that skipped those has to build them before any answer-side work can land.
Which one gives faster results?
Neither reliably. Answer-side changes can appear within a crawl cycle when the fix is access or rendering, and can take months when the gap is authority, because the constraint is which sources an engine already trusts. Anyone quoting a fixed timeline for either is quoting a sales figure.
How is GEO measured if there is no rank to check?
By sampling a fixed prompt set against each engine on a schedule and recording who was named, in what order, and which sources were cited. The measure is only as good as the prompts behind it, which is why a share-of-answer figure reported without its questions cannot be checked.
Do the same pages serve both?
Usually, with different editing. A page written to rank tends to be long and comprehensive; the same page earns citations when its individual sections are made self-contained, so a passage still says what it is about after the heading around it is stripped.
Does traffic falling mean GEO is working or failing?
Neither on its own. Answer engines resolve many questions without a click, so a brand can gain presence and lose sessions at the same time. Traffic and share of answer have to be read together, because either one alone will mislead.
