AI Overviews vs ChatGPT: different roads to the answer.
Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT both answer questions in prose, and they assemble those answers differently. AI Overviews sits on top of Google's existing search index, so the pages it draws from are broadly the pages Google already ranks, and the answer appears above the results it was built from. ChatGPT answers from a mix of model memory and live retrieval performed by its own agents, so a page can be quoted without ranking anywhere, and can be missed despite ranking first. The practical consequence is that search rankings carry over to one surface and only partly to the other.
01Side by side
Where Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT part company.
| Dimension | Google AI Overviews | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Where sources come from | Google's search index, largely from pages already ranking for the query. | Model memory plus live retrieval through OpenAI's own agents. |
| Does ranking carry over | Substantially. Pages cited in an overview are usually pages Google already surfaces. | Partly. A page can be quoted without ranking, and can rank without ever being quoted. |
| Which crawler matters | Googlebot for the index, with Google-Extended governing training use separately. | OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User at answer time, GPTBot for training. |
| How citation appears | Linked source cards beside and beneath the overview. | Inline footnotes when the answer used retrieval, and no citation at all when it answered from memory. |
| Where the answer sits | Above the organic results, which remain on the page beneath it. | In place of the results. There is no list underneath. |
| Query context | One query at a time, typed the way people type into a search box. | A conversation, where the follow-up carries the earlier turns with it. |
| What visibility depends on most | Ranking for the query, plus a passage clear enough to be summarised. | Being retrievable at answer time, and being an entity the model already associates with the category. |
02The overlap
The same preconditions gate both
Neither surface can use a page it cannot fetch and parse. Crawl access, server-side rendering and machine-readable structure are prerequisites on both, and a site failing those fails everywhere at once rather than surface by surface.
Both also reward the same shape of writing. A passage that answers one question completely, names its own subject, and does not depend on the heading above it is easier to summarise for an overview and easier to quote in a chat answer. The editing that serves one serves the other.
Where they genuinely diverge is what carries a brand into the answer when retrieval alone is not decisive. Overviews lean on the index, so search authority transfers. ChatGPT leans partly on what the model already associates with a category, which is built by being mentioned across sources the model absorbed rather than by anything on the site itself.
03Which you need
The answer depends on what is broken.
01
Work on Overviews through the search programme
Because the source pool is largely the ranking pool, the fastest route into an overview is usually ranking for the query and making the relevant passage cleanly summarisable. This is search work with an editing pass, not a separate programme.
02
Work on ChatGPT through retrieval and entity
Allow the answer-time agents, render server-side, and make the business identifiable as an entity with corroborating references elsewhere. A page can be perfect and still be skipped if the model has no reason to associate the brand with the category.
03
Measure them separately
Presence on one says little about the other, and a single blended visibility score hides which surface is losing. The prompt set should be run against each engine on its own and reported that way.
04Questions
Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT, asked plainly.
- If I rank first on Google, will ChatGPT cite me?
- Not necessarily. ChatGPT retrieves through its own agents and also answers from model memory, so a first-place page that blocks OAI-SearchBot, renders in the browser, or belongs to a business the model cannot identify can be absent from answers it ought to win.
- Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT answers?
- Not by itself. GPTBot collects training data; OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User fetch pages at answer time. Blocking the training crawler while allowing the answer-time agents leaves live citation intact, and the reverse is the mistake that quietly removes a site from answers.
- Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
- On informational queries they resolve on the page, an overview can answer the question outright and the click does not happen. That is a real effect and it is the mechanism behind zero-click search, though the size of it varies enormously by query type.
- Which surface should a brand prioritise?
- Whichever one the buyers are using, which is a question to answer by measuring rather than by argument. Categories differ sharply, and the assumption that everyone has moved to assistants is as unreliable as the assumption that nobody has.
- Are Perplexity and Claude closer to one or the other?
- Both are closer to ChatGPT in mechanics: their own answer-time agents, retrieval-led answers and inline citations. Perplexity cites more aggressively than either, which makes it the surface where a citation gap shows up earliest.
