What is Citation Gap?
- Citation Gap
- A citation gap is the difference between the sources an answer engine cites for a category's questions and the sources a given brand actually appears on. Measuring a citation gap turns a vague visibility problem into a specific list: the publications, directories and comparison pages the engines already draw from, ranked by how often, with the ones missing the brand marked.
01 In practice
The gap is found by reading citations rather than by auditing the site. Running a category's prompts across each engine and recording every source cited produces the list an engine demonstrably trusts for those questions, and that list rarely matches one built from domain authority scores.
Working the gap is cheaper than building authority from nothing. Earning a place on a page the engines already fetch puts a brand into the retrieved material directly, whereas a new page on the brand's own domain has to earn its way into retrieval first.
A citation gap also explains declines that look inexplicable on-site. A brand losing mentions with nothing changed on its own domain has usually lost the source it was cited from, either because a competitor took the placement or because the page itself changed.
